What should came into my head when I offered to have a video game console for my 10th birthday gift was a Nintendo Electronic System (NES). The console was my very choice at the first time because I was so in loved with Mario and Luigi which I usually have with my cousins. Hunting for mushrooms and mighty flowers in order to save the Princess was an unforgettable moment. There were eight levels to be accomplished and I usually passed them within two days.

Talking about video games, Nintendo Entertainment System was a remarkable one after its predecessor, Atari. Its success then followed by the 32-bit game console: Sega. They kicked off the new gaming experience by offering a broad selection of game titles. One that never shifted off from my favorite was Mortal Kombat. Various tricks, hotkeys, and hidden figures were the interesting feature that I adore the most from the game.

To cope with the success of Sega, Nintendo launched the 64-bit generation named Nintendo 64. Unfortunately, the console was nothing more than a short buzz that I never noticed it for being popular. None of my friends give it a shot.

Nintendo Wii is another story from the company. Unlike the early years, now they have to compete with another rival such as Sony Playstation 3 and Microsoft Xbox. But, with the innovation, Nintendo Wii brings the new experience in the gaming world with the introduction of the Wii Remote that completely different with other system. My friend gave it a try and the result was astonishing. I think I’m going to have one.

Of course it’s hard for us to get disengaged with these web services today since we want to stay in touch. Using different account on Yahoo Messenger is not a problem, but if you are using GoogleTalk, you might stumble to some hassle.

If you want to do so, then there is a way to use multiple GoogleTalk account in one time. You’ll only need 4 steps to do the technique.

Make the application’s shortcut on your desktop. In this case, right click on the GoogleTalk application, choose Send To > Desktop (create shortcut).

Right click on the GoogleTalk icon and then choose Properties.

Change the target location which in default is written C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe” /startmenu with the following rule “C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe” /nomutex.

Click OK, and you’re done.

While several days ago, a husband-and-wife team proclaimed their newly search engine will be the next Google rival, today another news is coming from Yahoo. The search engine which has almost-the-same title with the Cuil search engine: Yuil, are about to come into the competition. The Washington Post said that it was only matter of time.

In a surprising (and hilarious) twist, Yuil is actually the product of Yahoo VP of Platforms, Sam Pullara, who is using the site to show off Yahoo’s recently-released BOSS API. BOSS is unique among search engine APIs, giving developers an unprecedented level of control over results generated by Yahoo’s search engine. And while Yuil isn’t really doing anything new with its search results, they’re more relevant than the occasionally bizarre ones we’ve been getting from Cuil.

Developers are only just starting to tap into the power afforded by the BOSS API - we’ll probably see dozens of similar search engines like this pop up over the next few months. The difference between these, and the generic API-based engines we’ve seen before, is that developers will be able to manipulate and reorder the results to make them more meaningful - something that APIs from most other search engines prohibit.

A study showing effective and ineffective ways of conversing with Alzheimer’s patients was among the research presented today at the Alzheimer’s Assn. International Conference in Chicago. The meeting, which began Sunday, is a gathering of leading researchers, doctors and patient advocates working on Alzheimer’s disease. Booster Shots will bring you updates from the meeting through its conclusion Wednesday.

Among the many challenges for caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients is how to stay engaged in a conversation with someone who may have trouble remembering events, expressing thoughts and following a conversation. But two studies show that caregivers can communicate effectively with patients if they avoid a few traps. UCLA researcher Jeanne Katzman studied the dinner conversations of 30 families in which one member had a recent diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. She found that when the Alzheimer’s patient said something that was unexpected or disrupted the normal flow of conversation, family members tended to continue their talk as if the person with Alzheimer’s had not spoken — thus taking the person with Alzheimer’s out of the conversation. In other cases, family members would try to reword the comment, expand on it and bring it to a close, also eclipsing the Alzheimer’s patient’s contribution. The study will help researchers design programs that teach family members how to facilitate conversation and enable the patient to participate. Another study, from researchers at the University of Kansas, found that adults with Alzheimer’s in nursing homes who are talked to like children are more resistant to care.

A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease shouldn’t mean the end of physical exercise. Indeed, researchers at the University of Kansas found that people in early stages of the disease who had better fitness ratings also had less atrophy in a part of the brain linked to memory. This is the first study using MRI brain imaging to link cardiovascular fitness with specific brain changes in the hippocampus. The hippocampus is one of the first areas of the brain to suffer damage in the disease progression. “These studies reinforce the need for increased awareness and education about the importance of living a brain-healthy lifestyle, including staying physically active,” said William Thies, vice president of medical and scientific research for the Alzheimer’s Assn.

On the treatment front, scientists reported on a phase-two study of a compound targeting early abnormal brain changes in a protein called tau in people with mild cognitive impairment. The compound was able to improve various measures of memory. The drug, called AL-108, is under development by Allon Therapeutics. Another study revealed that people who took a combination of insulin and oral anti-diabetes medication had fewer Alzheimer’s related brain changes. Doctors have known for years that people with diabetes have a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease than non-diabetics. But studies have also shown that some people with diabetes have fewer Alzheimer’s-associated brain lesions than non-diabetics. Researchers think that a better understanding of insulin signaling in the brain may lead to new treatments for Alzheimer’s disease.

I never heard about Knol until my friend referred me to the site. As soon as I entered the homepage, all I recognize was the concept of Wikipedia, which allows everyone to write a page on a specific issue. The title says “Knol: A Unit of Knowledge”. For any blogger who interested on building backlinks, This might sound interesting since you can take part by writing any articles that you know and put a link right to your blog. But unfortunately, you need to look up the page source and spot the meta robots that stated the pages are indexed but all the outbound links are nofollowed.

The nofollow tag here means that links you put in the Knol’s page will not count as a referrer to your site for the PageRank calculation. Again, it’s only affect the site’s Pagerank, not the your site itself. Knol is starts to grow into a trustworthy source of content. In this case, any blogger can use Knol as the entry page for the specific niche that they cover on their blog. They could use the article tactics to promote their blog as well as they usually did on ArticlesBase, iSnare, or ArticleAlley. Writing a page on Knol can establish someone’s authority on specific field.

The advantage of Knol is that they’re ranked specifically on Google’s SERP, since they are one of the Google’s property. Danny Sullivan from Search Engine Land has been conduction some tests with Knol pages, and the results are surprising. 30% of all the Knol pages that he created for test pages were ranking on the first page of Google’s results after one day.

The SEO master, Aaron Wall also proved that with some backlinks involved a Knol page that duplicates a page of an existing web page will outrank the original.

I haven’t tried it, yet but I’m sure they will provide a good contribution to my blog if I can use it properly. Are you interested?

Talking about search engines, our memory should call out the name ‘Google’ since they provide the most complete result for each specific keywords that we submit. The other thing that makes Google become the most preferred search engine is the simplicity of the homepage which needs little time to load even with the slow like dial-up internet connection.

The Google domination has become so great for several years, but today they’re gonna have another rival on the business. Former Google search architect Anna Patterson along with her husband Tom Costello is building a search engine which they called as Cuil (pronounced as ‘cool’). The search engine is bieng claimed can index three times as many web pages as Google.

Upon the claim, I tried to search the word ‘syahdiar’ as it’s the domain name of this blog and found three pages of search result. Not bad at all, since they just launched today.

The interesting thing about this Cuil search engine is the black colored background which used on their homepage. I don’t know if they tend to commit on the ‘Save the Earth by Saving the energy’ project, but the design quite sleek. The search result page also provided in columns layout, with several images around.

We never know if their effort to get Google out of their dominations will succeed in short time. Of course they should have a lot lot of ammunition to bring their mission into success.

Researchers studying the effects of general anesthesia recently made a startling discovery: the drugs used to knock out patients during surgery may lead to increased pain when they wake up.

Doctors have known for decades that most general anesthetics may cause a temporary burning sensation when administered or swelling around the injection site. Similarly, inhaled agents can cause momentary coughing bouts, according to Gerard Ahern, a pharmacologist at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Now Ahern has discovered that some drugs used to put patients to sleep may also increase postoperative pain from the procedure itself by boosting the activity of a protein called TRPA1 on the surface of pain-sensing nerve cells.

Ahern and his colleagues write in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA that anesthesiologists may be able to limit post-op pain by sticking to meds that do not have this effect. “By understanding the mechanisms for these noxious effects,” says Hugh Hemmings, a professor of anesthesiology at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, “it gives you a way to screen for new drugs that don’t have these effects, but do produce anesthesia.”

Ahern says the study may shed light on why some patients complain of more pain than others who have the same surgical procedure, although the researchers did not identify a particular ingredient in anesthesia that may cause the effect.

In attempting to pinpoint pain sources, Ahern and his team examined the effect of various anesthetics on TRPA1 and TRPV1, two proteins known to sense pain and respond to chemical irritants. Cells containing TRPA1 were activated by the drugs, but TRPV1 cells appeared to be unaffected. Research confirmed their findings on lab mice engineered not to produce TRPA1. When anesthesia was administered to them, they did not twitch their legs or frantically rub their noses against the walls and floors of their cages as they normally do.

That meant the researchers knew that the anesthetic was causing irritation while it was being administered. “We’ve shown that a direct irritation [from the anesthetic] is caused by TRPA1,” says Ahern. “This is a provocative finding in terms of the clinical setting, because it was not really recognized that use of these drugs result in [the] release of lots of chemicals that recruit immune cells to the nerves, which causes more pain and inflammation.”

The next step was to determine if more noxious drugs were likely to increase the pain following surgery. To do that, the team anesthetized one group of mice with an agent called isoflurane (the most widely used gaseous general anesthetic), and another group of animals with a drug called sevoflurane (which generally elicits a much milder reaction when it is administered). The researchers then swabbed the ears of the mice with another known irritant—to simulate tissue damage from surgery. They found that the ears on the mice injected with isoflurane swelled more dramatically, and the swelling persisted for much longer.

“During surgery a surgeon is cutting in with a scalpel and it’s causing a lot of tissue damage,” says Ahern. “[This result] suggests that during surgery you might get more activation of the TRPA1 if you use a pungent anesthetic” such as isoflurane, which will cause increased and longer-lasting pain at the surgery site. Avoiding such drugs or developing ones that ignore this protein, he notes, should lead to greater patient comfort.

It was a beautiful moment when you are having the first date with your girl. The movie was so romantic, the dinner was great, and the sky just as beautiful as your hands were stick each other. As you both sit on a bench in the city garden, had a light conversation, you both started to look each other and thought the same thing. You want to have a kiss.

Unfortunately, both of you were shy enough, so until the night ends and each of you went home, nothing has happened. No kiss because none of you started the it.

The condition that you experienced can be described with the word Mamihlapinatapai. Say it again? Mamihlapinatapai. It’s the word in Yaghan language of Tierra del Fuego which describes a look shared by two people with each wishing that the other will initiate something that both desire but which neither one wants to start. This could perhaps be translated more succinctly as “eye-contact implying ‘after you…’”. A more literal approximation is “ending up mutually at a loss as to what to do about each other”.

And you know… the word Mamihlapinatapai is listed in The Guinness Book of World Records as the most succinct word and is considered one of the hardest words to translate.

Okay. Will you say it again?
